Here We Grow Again! CHSU Announces Record Enrollment for 2017-18 Academic Year
August 23, 2017
CHSU is pleased to announce a record-breaking enrollment for their incoming class of Doctor of Pharmacy students. Eighty-eight aspiring pharmacists began their first day of classes on Monday, August 21st at the only College of Pharmacy in the Central Valley with plans to graduate in 2021.
“We are proud to announce another historic achievement at CHSU, with our largest class of incoming pharmacy students since we launched in 2014,” stated Wendy Duncan, PhD, Provost. “Meeting our enrollment goal is especially exciting when other colleges around the Nation have reported that enrollment has been challenging or has even declined.”
The university reported that about 85% of the newest class of students are from California, with 61% of the students from the Central Valley. Here is the breakdown of incoming students’ by school of origin:
- • 24% from Fresno State
- • 21% from another California State University (CSU)
- • 20% from University of California (UC)
- • 15% Out of State College
- • 12% Other Colleges
- • 8% Fresno Pacific University
Daniel Brown, PharmD, Dean of Pharmacy said, “We are elated that 61% of our diverse student body are from the Central Valley. An important component of the CHSU mission is to recruit the best and brightest students from our region.”
“With 4 of 5 Honors at Entrance students being from Valley and qualifying for CHSU scholarship awards of either $20,000 or $40,000 awarded over four years, we feel we are on track to help make higher education more affordable and attainable for Valley students”, stated Brown.
This new academic year at CHSU College of Pharmacy also marks the first time in the new university’s history that all four classes are in session, with over 260 Doctor of Pharmacy students enrolled.
The next major milestone will be the inaugural class of CHSU pharmacy students graduating in May 2018. Graduating the first class of students is necessary before the university will be considered for full accreditation by both the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). However, having achieved Candidate accreditation status with both accreditors allows their students the same rights and privileges as a fully accredited university and enables the students to take the licensure exams.
