Over One Million Dollars in Scholarships Given to Local Pharmacy Students
November 28, 2017
California Health Sciences University (CHSU) has announced that over one million dollars in scholarships have been awarded to their Doctor of Pharmacy students over the last four years. Established in 2014, the CHSU Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial awards to CHSU students based on merit and financial need and gives preference to local students.
“Student success is our highest priority and we feel that access to an affordable education is paramount for our students to successfully transition into their careers as pharmacists,” stated Florence T. Dunn, President at CHSU. “We are deeply grateful to our generous community partners for giving our students the financial ability to afford higher education.”
The Doctor of Pharmacy program is a full-time, four year program where graduates become pharmacists after taking their licensing exams. The CHSU student body includes working students, single parents, first generation college students and many others that admit they would not be able to afford the cost of attendance if scholarship funds were not granted.
Karen Pelham, a first year Doctor of Pharmacy candidate says, “This scholarship has helped me alleviate some of my economic concerns since my family is not able to help me financially. My scholarship will help me succeed in becoming a pharmacist on top of also being the first person in my family to get a degree.”
The University reported that scholarship recipients may be eligible for awards of up to $10,000 per year, which could amount to $40,000 over four years, based on merit and/or financial need. One example is the Honors at Entrance scholarship program. This merit-based scholarship award is up to $10,000 per year, and renewable each year for four years based on maintaining a specific GPA.
Daniel Brown, PharmD, Dean of the College of Pharmacy stated, “We are dedicated to help make higher education more affordable and attainable for Valley students. We are hopeful that many of our students will remain living and working in the local area upon graduation, as the quality of life and cost of living here is very appealing.”
To support the CHSU Scholarship Fund, the University is hosting their 3rd annual Ignite the Future Gala on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 6pm – 11pm at the Copper River Country Club. Details about the event, along with information regarding ticket purchases and sponsorship opportunities can be found online at chsu.edu/gala.
