CHSU Annual Research Day Highlights Local Research

California Health Sciences University (CHSU) hosted its annual Research Day at the College of Osteopathic Medicine campus on Saturday, May 4. The annual event continues to grow every year and allows for medical professionals, faculty, residents, medical students, and master’s program students to showcase their research and scholarly activities.
Keynote Speaker
This year’s keynote speaker was Marina Roytman, MD, FACP, Health Sciences Clinical Professor, UCSF; Liver Program Director, UCSF Fresno; and President of the Fresno Madera Medical Society. Dr. Roytman presented about, “The Central Valley’s Rise in Alcoholic Hepatitis During the Pandemic.”
Dr. Roytman trained at Oregon Health Science University and at Mount Sinai hospital in New York City. She has been a UCSF Clinical Professor and Liver Program Director at UCSF Fresno since 2017 where she teaches hepatology to Gastroenterology fellows, Internal Medicine residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.
Her academic interests include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, viral hepatitis and alcohol-related liver disease as documented by her publications and her role as principal investigator in multiple clinical trials.
More recently, she has been involved in research in alcohol-related liver disease given the dramatic rise of it during COVID-19 pandemic. She continues to be actively involved in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease research given that epidemic proportions portions of this condition is in the United States.
Poster Competition
CHSU Research Day also included a competition for the best poster for Students, Faculty, and Resident Physicians/Pharmacists. The top three presenters in each category were recognized with an award and certificate at the event.

Excellence in Public Health Award
CHSU-COM Student Doctor, Tina Singh was awarded the 2024 Excellence in Public Health Award from the U.S. Public Health Service Physician Professional Advisory Committee. Geni Perryment, PhD, Community Engagement Lead and Assistant Professor at CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine presented the award to Student Doctor Singh.
This award was established to recognize medical students’ contribution to public health. CHSU-COM nominated Student Doctor Singh for the award for her commitment to public health and to the goals and priorities of Healthy People 2030 and the Surgeon General’s Priorities.
The Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service is dedicated to leading the Nation’s public health promotion and disease prevention programs and to advancing public health science.
