CHSU Offers Fall Risk Assessments in Partnership with SAFE Program

CHSU is pleased to partner with SAFE (Senior Awareness and Fall Education) – Central Valley Coalition, Gait, Balance, and Mobility Research and Education Center which are a subset of the Department of Physical Therapy at California State University, Fresno to host a fall prevention clinic for seniors over age 55. The screening will assess participants for their strength, balance and risk of falling. There will be multiple assessments that will be completed by faculty and students from the Department of Physical Therapy, Department of Kinesiology, the School of Nursing, and CHSU’s Pharmacy Program. A licensed physical therapist and nurse practitioner will also be present for all testing.
All assessments will take place at CHSU’s campus (45 N. Clovis Ave, Clovis) on Tuesday, October 2 and Tuesday, October 30, by appointment only (appointments available from 8am – 2:30pm). Assessments take approximately 1 hour to complete and a signed doctor’s release is required to participate in the screening. These can be faxed to Fresno State Physical Therapy department at 559 278 3635 or brought with the participant on the day on the screening.
At the completion of the assessment, all participants will receive educational materials and when appropriate, will receive one of the following interventions: referral to a Group Fallproof™ class, referral to the Gait, Balance, and Mobility Center at Fresno State, an Individualized Progressive Home Exercise Program, Fresno State Community Health Nursing, and/or other community exercise classes. A summary of the fall risks and recommendations will be faxed to the primary care physician upon request. Participants can be re-screened every 6 months.
