CHSU Valley Reach Students Help Seniors Navigate Technology and Support Food Access in the Central Valley

Clovis Senior Activity Center

Medical students from Valley Reach at California Health Sciences University (CHSU) volunteered at the Clovis Senior Activity Center to provide technology assistance to older adults. During the event, CHSU students offered one-on-one support with common digital tasks, including using email, adjusting device settings, taking photos and videos, and transferring photos to a computer.

By helping participants build confidence with everyday technology, Valley Reach supported the center’s goal of helping older adults maintain independent, connected, and fulfilling lifestyles.

This hands-on service opportunity also reflects CHSU’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of the Central Valley. Through community outreach and meaningful connections with local residents, CHSU medical students are expanding their impact beyond the classroom while developing the compassion, communication skills, and service-minded approach essential to becoming future physicians.

First Fruits Market

Throughout the semester, Valley Reach volunteers regularly support the Central California Food Bank’s First Fruits Market, Fresno County’s first and only free grocery store. During each visit, our medical student volunteers would help restock shelves, bag groceries, organize food items, and assist customers at checkout.

This ongoing community service partnership helps expand access to fresh, nutritious food for individuals and families while addressing food insecurity throughout Fresno County and the Central Valley. Through their work at First Fruits Market, Valley Reach volunteers also help celebrate the culinary diversity of the region and strengthen connections with the communities they serve.
